Transsexualism and Sex Reassignment Surgery in Italy  / Angela Caldarera, Friedemann Pfäfflin.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 13 (2011) 1 (jan-mar), p. 26-36
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 13 (2011) 1 (jan-mar), p. 26-36
samenvatting: This article reports on the first efforts of systematically collecting national data regarding the prevalence of transsexualism and sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in Italy. The Italian Ministry of Health and the clinics offering such treatment were asked to cooperate by providing their data. Various problems were encountered in data collection, mainly due to the missing standardization of the record procedures in the clinics. The number of persons who underwent SRS, their age, nationality, the type of surgery and the sex ratio are reported. The resulting prevalence, lower than in other countries, suggests that the data is not complete. A standardization of the record procedures would make accessible full data and allow a reliable evaluation of the prevalence of transsexualism in Italy. Transsexualism : Treatment Outcome of Compliant and Noncompliant Patients  / Veronica Pimenoff, Friedemann Pfäfflin.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 13 (2011) 1 (jan-mar), p. 37-44
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 13 (2011) 1 (jan-mar), p. 37-44
samenvatting: The objective of the study was a follow-up of the treatment outcome of Finnish transsexuals who sought sex reassignment during the period 1970-2002 and a comparison of the results and duration of treatment of compliant and noncompliant patients. Fifteen male-to-female transsexuals and 17 female-to-male transsexuals who had undergone hormone and surgical treatment and legal sex reassignment in Finland completed a questionnaire on psychosocial data and on their experience with the different phases of clinical assessment and treatment. The changes in their vocational functioning and social and psychic adjustment were used as outcome indicators. The results and duration of the treatment of compliant and noncompliant patients were compared. The patients benefited significantly from treatment. The noncompliant patients achieved equally good results as the compliant ones, and did so in a shorter time. A good treatment outcome could be achieved even when the patient had told the assessing psychiatrist a falsified story of his life and sought hormone therapy, genital surgery, or legal sex reassignment on his own initiative without a recommendation from the psychiatrist. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the doctor-patient relationship be reconsidered and founded on frank cooperation. samenvatting: This collection represents the majority of papers and workshops presented at the conference Transgressing Gender: Two is not Enough for Gender (E)quality which was held in Zagreb in October, 2005. The conference was organized by the Women's Room and CESI from Zagreb, and partnering organizations DEVE from Belgrade and the Organization Q from Sarajevo. As the first of its type in Central and South-Eastern Europe, the main goal of the conference was to enable and support strategic alliances and cooperation between different social groups actively engaged in the issues of gender freedom, gender equality and promotion and protection of gender rights by way of overlapping feminist, gender and transgender theoretical and political orientations. You can read more about the conference by visiting http://www.zenskasoba.hr/tgenderzagreb/index.html where you can also download the Conference collection in both local and English languages.

Denied Identity : Human rights abuses against Iran's LGBT community

samenvatting: Rapport over situatie van lhbt-ers in Iran. Iran's penal code, known as the Islamic Penal Code (IPC) is based on Shari'a law, or Islamic religious law. The IPC explicitly criminalizes same-sex relations, even imposing the death penalty on individuals convicted of sodomy. While the evidentiary burden for providing that a homosexual act has occurred is difficult to overcome, in Iran's legal system, a judge based on his own "knowledge" can independently convict a person. While the Iranian government permits, and in fact encourages, sex-reassignment surgeries (SRS), transgender individuals face unequal treatment. They could be subject to arbitrary arrest simply due to their appearance.

Human Rights between the sexes : a preliminary study on the life situations of inter* individuals  / By Dan Christian Ghattas ; transl. [from German] by Adrian de Silva.

samenvatting: Inter* individuals are still pathologised and classified as 'sick' or 'abnormal'. As early as in infancy, by means of surgical interventions, they are frequently assigned to the male or female sex/gender in the Western world. However there is no medical necessity to do so. In Uganda there is strong evidence that mothers kill their intersex babies in order not to be cast out. The Heinrich Böll Foundation wishes to call attention to these violations of human rights against intersex individuals with this research report.

Pathologizing identities, paralyzing bodies : human rights violations against gay, lesbian and transgender people in Iran  / Raha Bahreini.

[S.l.]: Justice for Iran & Iranian Lesbian and Transgender Network (6Rang), 2014 - 99 p.

  2. genderidentiteiten
samenvatting: Irans legal gender recognition procedures have become out of step with international best practices, and turned into coercive mechanisms that are more about enforcing homophobia and stereotypical norms of masculinity and femininity than about increasing respect for the rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. These procedures must be understood in the context of Iran?s legal system that criminalizes same-sex sexual conduct and trans-dressing while imposing mandatory sex reassignment surgery, including sterilization, as a prerequisite not only for obtaining new identity documents reflecting one?s preferred gender but also for wearing the clothes associated with members of the opposite sex. Within this legal context, individuals who do not conform to stereotypical models of femininity and masculinity are divided into two distinct yet inter-related categories: transsexual-patients and homosexual-perverts. The first label is applied to those who assume gender normalcy through hormone therapy, sterilization and genital reassignment surgery while the second is applied to those who transgress socially constructed gender expectations without applying to become diagnosed as certified transsexuals undergoing sex reassignment procedures. They remain marginalized and face hatred and violence, arbitrary deprivations of liberty; and widespread discrimination in areas such as employment, education and access to goods and services.
